Good Parenting Strategies

There’s been a dichotomy in parenting approaches over the past century. The authoritarian, whilst achieving the discipline required in developing ‘compliant’ children, runs the risk of producing adult children who do the right thing but have never been taught why i.e. the moral why. I see evidence of them both, as we parents struggle to achieve the right balance, and I see how destructive and unbalanced they both can be; in my life and in others’.

There is a debate between parents if spying and snooping on your teens is ethical or not. In the following situation, however, I think that both camps will agree that it can be and was very helpful. One day I was teaching him one on one and he was looking around the room. You won’t believe what I found there; a test with the number 100% written, by the teacher, on the bottom of it. He is aggressive and violent and has threatened to report them to the welfare authorities if they lay a finger on him. A good parenting tip is badly needed in this family. I should just help him get good marks and eventually he will realize that he is not retarded and that his brain is normal size.

When a new marriage thrusts you into the role of step parent, you may find the journey to be fraught with obstacles. And if you don’t have children of your own, you are now having your first experience with parenting. This is a situation that will require quite a bit of adjustment. While you may not be their biological parent you are still an adult who is worthy of respect.

The author identified the core virtue - the virtue from which all others spring - as empathy. The Golden Rule, ‘treat others as you would like to be treated’, is specified in some form in every tradition I can think of. And there’s a difference between teaching your tween not to tease someone because it’s wrong vs. because it might cause the victim real pain. Developing empathy requires getting beyond punishment, social mores, or even ideas about right and wrong.
